Pearson-Skubitz "Big Hill" Lake & Park  

Open year round, Big Hill Lake was built in 1981 just 5-miles east of downtown Cherryvale. It is nestled in the rolling, timbered "Little Ozark" countryside offering many recreational opportunities including fishing in pristine waters, hunting, boating, picnicking, swimming, bird and animal watching, and hiking trails. As the only clear water lake of its type in Kansas, it offers visitors a break from the typical lakes in Kansas and other mid-America states. Fishermen will find a  fishing berm, steep drop-offs and controlled brush piles which encourage growth and development of many varieties of fish. The lake is a wonderful place for family get-togethers and reunions. Along the east and west side of the lake is a 17-mile horse trail with special facilities for those camping with their horses. The trail winds through a variety of terrain ranging from open meadows to wooded hills within view of the lake. It provides great riding for all ages to enjoy.

There are 140 designated camper and RV sites (104 with electricity), showers, restrooms with running water, sanitary facilities, all paved roads and pullouts, a creative playground and ball field, rustic group shelters with potable water, and comfortable tables with convenient cooking grills. Bill Hill Lake has southeast Kansas's only sandy swimming beaches with its own parking facility and  a changehouse with restrooms. An annual sand sculpture contest is held on the beach in early July. Food, bait/fishing tackle and medical facilities are available near the lake.

While enjoying the full complement of its recreational opportunities, take time to explore natural trail areas around the lake with their complex associations of flora and fauna. The vistas and views offer an experience which only another visit can surpass.
